# Proposals

Decide together and prepare org chart changes before applying them.

## Overview

A proposal lets a team **decide together** and **prepare changes to the org chart** before applying them. It combines a decision to be voted on with a set of role changes that take effect only once the proposal is approved.

Proposals are created from a topic, alongside decisions and polls, so the discussion stays in one place.

## When to Use a Proposal

Use a proposal when a change needs the agreement of the people involved, for example:

* Reorganizing roles, sub-roles or members.
* Inviting a role into another role.
* Adopting a new way of working that you want to record as a decision.

Org chart changes inside a proposal stay independent from the live org chart. They are applied only when the proposal is approved, so you can prepare everything calmly and let people vote first.

## Creating a Proposal

1. Open a topic.
2. Click **Proposal** in the action bar below the message field.
3. Fill in the proposal:
    * **Decision title** and **description** of what is decided.
    * **Org chart changes** prepared in the editor (see below).
    * **Decision mode** that defines how approval is reached.
    * **Who can vote**, the participants of the topic or the participants of the role.
    * **Abstention**, an extra vote you can allow for modes other than consent.
    * **Early resolution** to settle the proposal as soon as the outcome is certain.
    * An optional **resolution deadline** to settle the proposal at a chosen date and time.

## Preparing Org Chart Changes

Click **Edit org chart** to open a full-screen editor with a yellow border. It shows the same org chart and role panel as the org chart page, dedicated to roles.

In this editor you can:

* Move a role onto another role.
*   Copy a role.
* Add or remove members of a role.
* Invite or remove a role into another role.
* Edit a role in the side panel.

Every change is listed under the proposal. These changes are saved with the proposal and applied to the live org chart only once it is approved. A **Shortcuts** button explains the mouse and keyboard commands.

If a prepared change can no longer be applied, for example because a role was removed in the meantime, it is flagged so you can remove it and keep the proposal valid.

## Decision Modes

The decision mode defines how the proposal is approved from the votes of the topic participants:

* **Consent** passes unless someone objects.
* **Unanimity** passes when everyone approves.
* **Simple majority** passes when approvals outnumber objections.
* **Absolute majority** passes when approvals exceed half of the participants.

## Voting

Depending on the proposal, the voters are the participants of the topic or the participants of the role. While a proposal is in progress, each voter casts a vote directly on the proposal card. With consent, the choices are **I consent** and **I object**. With the other modes, they are **I approve**, **I oppose**, and **I abstain** when abstention is allowed. Comments and reactions happen in the topic discussion below the proposal.

The card shows how many voters have voted. You can reveal who voted what at resolution by turning on that option when you create the proposal.

If a proposal is in progress and not visible on screen, a button at the top of the discussion takes you straight to it.

## Resolution

A proposal settles on its own:

* **When everyone has voted** among the voters.
* **Early**, as soon as the outcome is certain, when early resolution is on. For example, with consent a single objection settles the proposal right away.
* **At the resolution deadline** you set, with the votes cast by then.

The proposal author or a leader of the role can also resolve it at any time from the **Manage** menu, with **Resolve now**. The outcome, approved or refused, comes from the votes.

When a proposal is **approved**, its prepared changes are applied to the live org chart and a **decision** is recorded in the role, with the same title and description. You can open it from the proposal with **View the saved decision**. A resolution entry is added to the topic showing the result and who voted what.

## Editing, Canceling and Recreating

A proposal can be edited freely until it receives its first vote, from its edit icon or the **Manage** menu. After that, to keep the vote fair, use **Cancel and recreate** to close it and start a fresh proposal prefilled with the same content, ready to adjust before submitting again. A refused proposal also offers a **Recreate** button to relaunch it.
