# MCP Connector

Give ChatGPT, Claude or Mistral Vibe access to your Rolebase data with the MCP connector and an API key.

## Overview

The MCP connector links an [AI assistant](/en/guides/use-an-ai-assistant) to your Rolebase account. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard assistants use to connect to other services. Setting it up takes two steps: create an API key in Rolebase, then add the connector in your assistant.

## Create an API key

1. In Rolebase, open the settings menu and go to **My account > API keys**.
2. Click **Create API key**, name it after the assistant (for instance "Claude"), then click **Create**.
3. Copy the key with the copy button.

## Add the connector

Every assistant asks for the server URL, `https://api.rolebase.io/mcp`, and for your API key, which it sends with each request.

### Claude

1. Go to [Customize > Connectors](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors) and click **Add custom connector**.
2. Name it "Rolebase" and enter the server URL.
3. For authentication, choose **No sign-in**.
4. Under **Request headers**, pick `x-api-key` and paste your API key as the value.
5.  Click **Add**.

The connector is then available on the web, in the desktop app and on mobile.

The **Request headers** section is gradually opening to Claude accounts. If it is missing from your dialog, enter `https://api.rolebase.io/mcp/YOUR_API_KEY` as the server URL instead, and skip step 4.

** Key in the URL**

With this option, the URL contains your API key: whoever has it can act in Rolebase on your behalf. Share it with nobody, and delete the key in Rolebase if it leaks.

** Claude Team and Enterprise**

On these plans, an Owner adds the connector for the whole Claude organization, with a single API key. All members would then act in Rolebase with the Owner's account.

### Mistral Vibe

1. Open the **Connectors** page and add a connector from the **Custom MCP Connector** tab.
2. Name it `rolebase`, enter the server URL, then click **Connect**.
3. When Mistral Vibe asks for authentication, choose the bearer token option and paste your API key.

### ChatGPT

ChatGPT only accepts connectors with no authentication or with an OAuth sign-in. The API key therefore goes in the URL of the connector:

```
https://api.rolebase.io/mcp/YOUR_API_KEY
```

** Key in the URL**

This URL contains your API key: whoever has it can act in Rolebase on your behalf. Share it with nobody, and delete the key in Rolebase if it leaks.

1. In ChatGPT on the web, open **Settings**, then **Apps** (called **Connectors** on some accounts).
2. In the advanced settings, turn on **Developer mode** if ChatGPT asks for it.
3. Create an app: name it "Rolebase", paste the URL above with your key and choose **No authentication**.
4. In a conversation, turn on the Rolebase app from the **+** menu.

Custom apps are available on paid ChatGPT plans, depending on the options OpenAI opens to your account.

### Developer tools

To connect Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or VS Code, see the [MCP server](/en/developers/mcp) page of the Developers section. These agents can also use the [Rolebase skill](/en/developers/skill) instead of the connector: it calls the Rolebase API directly with your API key.

## Check the connection

Ask your assistant "What are my Rolebase organizations?". It should list them. If it reports a missing or invalid API key, check the URL, or create a new key and add the connector again.

## Revoke access

Delete the API key in **My account > API keys**. The assistant loses access right away, and your other keys keep working.
